It is the Ukiyoe of a dynamic composition drawn by Kuniyoshi Utagawa.
In the Edo period, the theory was that even if there were three consecutive ukiyoe paintings, each one would be an independent picture.
However, Kuniyoshi completely ignored this custom and drew a Ukiyoe with dynamic composition that was only possible after seeing three consecutive sheets, and he became very popular.
This Ukiyoe also has a rare composition of vertical type, and it is a wonderful picture that is powerful when viewed as a whole.
Musashi Miyamoto was a swordsman in the early Edo period and is said to have hardly lost in fighting over his life.
There are many episodes left in addition to the battle with Kojiro Sasaki on Ganryujima and the battle with Yoshioka family in Kyoto.
It is famous that he confronted the fox monster, Osakabehime, who lived in Himeji Castle, and expelled her from Himeji Castle.
In this picture, a black smoke youkai clings to Musashi.
