In the middle of the Heian period, famous thief named Yasusuke Hakamadare (Fujiwara) fell into fear for the capital of Kyoto.
Yorimitsu Minamoto and his subordinate 4 brave Samurais went to Mt. Ashigara to arrest Hakamadare.
Hakamadare used witchcraft to make a large snake appear and dazzled Yorimitsu.
This Ukiyoe is the masterpiece of Yoshitsuya Utagawa depicting the legend. Hakamadare was later arrested, then at that time, he cut his belly and died the next day under the wound.
This is said to be the first “Harakiri” in Japanese history.
This picture actually has another meaning.
It represents a political dispute over Tokugawa 14th General. It is said that the great snake represents Yoshinobu Hitotsubashi, the small bear represents Yoshitomi Tokugawa of Kishu, and Hakamadare that manipulates the great snake represents Nariaki Tokugawa of Mito.
This is a historical Ukiyoe in Heian period, as well as a caricature at the end of the Edo period.
