Jizaemon Arimura was a swordsman of Satsuma, and a sword master who studied the Jigen-ryu style in Satsuma and the Hokushin-Ittouryu style in Edo.
Since his youth, he was eager to participate in the Supporting Emperor activities, leaving the Satsuma clan and interacting with Mito clans.
At that time, the Ansei hell, led by Naosuke Ii, was raging and opposition was being suppressed by the Shogunate one after another.
The Mito clan, which was a resistance to the shogunate, was also suppressed, and it’s boss, Nariaki Tokugawa was forced to be retired.
Then the incident happened.
On the morning of March 24, 1860, Naosuke Ii was attacked by Mito lords near Sakuradamon.
It is called “the incident outside Sakurada gate”.
Jizaemon Arimura also participated, dragging out Naosuke Ii who was in the basket and taking his head.
Immediately after, however, Jizaemon was severely injured when his back was cut down by Hikone Clan man, who guarded Naosuke.
Jizaemon was once helped, but died exhausted afterwards.
This incident was a sign of decline in the power of the Tokugawa shogunate, and then the defeat for Shogunate by the Satsuma and Choshu clans accelerated.
