At the end of the Heian period, during the reign of Emperor Nijo, terrible youkai worried Heiankyo.
At that time, the emperor became sick, with eerie screams annoying people every night, along with black smoke.
The Imperial Court commissioned Yoritomasa Minamoto, a descendant of Yorimitsu Minamoto, the master of bows, to exterminate youkai.
Yorimitsu was famous for exterminating many terrible youkais, such as Shutendoji and Tsuchigumo.
Yorimasa waited at the Imperial Palace.
Then black smoke covered the sky, terrifying screams, and a black shadow appeared in the sky.
Yorimasa drew the bow, handed down to Genji and fired an arrow at his cry.
Then a large shadow fell on the north side of Nijo Castle.
The subordinate of Yorimasa stabbed the end.
The Youkai was “Nue”, with monkey face, raccoon’s body, tiger’s limbs, and snake’s tails.
Emperor Nijo's illness was cured, and Emperor gave the great sword “Shishimaru” as the reward to Yorimitsu.
This is the terrifying youkai, Nue, drawn by the genius Artist, Kuniyoshi Utagawa.
