The first Tenran Kabuki (the performance in front of the Emperor)in history was realized in the private residence of Kaoru Inoue, a foreign lord in Toriizaka, in the 20th year of the Meiji era. The tea room at Nara Todaiji Temple was relocated to the Inoue House and held there. The Meiji government was trying to form the performing arts of Japan alongside Western opera. Kabuki, which used to be a performance for ordinary people, was also aimed at improving its position while Noh and Sumo were being viewed by the Meiji Emperor. The protagonist, the leading Kabuki world at the time, was the ninth generation Ichikawa Danjuro. The performances were selected from high-quality ones such as Kanjincho. On the day of the event, Benkei was performed by Danjuro Ichikawa, and Togashi was played by Sadanji Ichikawa. Sadanji said he had been nervous and trembling. It was said that it was held in a quiet place because there was no clapping Musical instrument and the Meiji Emperor had no habit of applauding on that day. With the success of this Tenran Kabuki, Kabuki was recognized as one of Japan's representative traditional cultures, and the 9th generation Ichikawa Danjuro, who made every effort to reform Kabuki, was called "Saint Drama".
