This is the popular Kabuki performance, “Sukeroku”. Sukeroku in Hanakawado who is the lover of Agemaki, the most popular Oiran in Yoshiwara were in conflict with Samurai Ikyu. Try to get angry for Ikyu, with curse, fight quarrels offend, let Ikyu take out swords. Sukeroku, beautiful boy like a representative of Edo, Agemaki, Yoshiwara's prostitute, featuring a sense of enthusiasm and tension. It is a popular kabuki in the Edo period. It is a popular composition of Toyokuni the 3rd, a master of Kabuki paintings. This program is based on the revenge of the Soga brothers that actually occurred in the early Kamakura period. The true figure of Sukeroku is Goro Soga. The plays with Soga brothers and Goro Soga as the main characters were very popular with the common people during the Edo period, and various programs were performed in Kabuki. In this Kabuki, the first Fukusuke Nakamura played five roles alone. This is called five changes. Sukeroku, Agemaki, and Ikkyu depicted here are all performed by Fukusuke alone.
