It is a famous scene of the popular Kabuki performance “Sukeroku”, which was played from Tenpo to Kanei in the latter half of the Edo period, with Danjuro Ichikawa the 8th as the leading role. Danjuro Ichikawa the 8th was very handsome guy and was very popular at the time, especially from women. His father, Danjuro the 7th, had been expelled from Edo for a while due to Tempo reform, but when he returned, there is an episode. When Danjuro the 7th passed Hakone with his son, Danjuro the 8th, many fans came to pick them up. “My popularity is still not abandoned.”, thought the seventh generation. But most people were 8th generation fans. Danjuro the 8th also had a good personality. When the father was exiled, he prayed for safety and struck the temple every day. So he was commended his filial piety by the Shogunate. |
