The picture shows Kabuki's representative performance "Shinaraku", played by 9th Generation Danjuro Ichikawa during the Meiji period. In the middle of the Edo period, the first generation Danjuro Ichikawa was played its original form, then 7th generation Danjuro Ichikawa selected this as “Kabuki 18 main stories”, and 9th generation Danjuro Ichikawa was established this program as the current form. The story is that, the villain man aiming for the throne captures Kamo Jiro Yoshitsuna and other good people, and tries to kill them, at the time, the hero Gongoro Kamakura appears, saying "for a while", and plays active part and defeat the villain. Easy-to-understand stories of good and bad were very popular with people from the Edo and Meiji periods. 9th generation Danjuro Ichikawa reorganized Kabuki in a modern style, sublimating Kabuki, which was once a townsman culture, into one of Japan's leading traditional performing arts, and leaving great achievements in the kabuki world. He was called "Saint of Drama". This is drawn by Kunichika Toyohara, the leading Kabuki Ukiyoe artist in the Meiji era.
