This is the Ukiyoe art by Yoshitoshi Tsukioka depicting Yoshiwara, a playground in the Edo period.
In Yoshiwara, there was Nakanomachi, a central street, where cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves were transplanted to create an artificial beauty.
Originally near the current Nihonbashi, Yoshiwara was burnt by the great fire of the Meireki era and then relocated near Asakusa.
It is said that Yoshiwara prostitutes were often brought in when they were children and were sold by poor parents.
When they were a kid, it was common for them to work general affairs, then go to the store after a certain age.
Yoshiwara prostitutes had ranks, and a woman who had both good looks and intelligence could become the top Tayuu or Oiran.
Yoshihara's work was also an annual contact, and it is said that about 80% of the women were released after all of the annual contact.
This Ukiyoe is very beautifully painted by Yoshitoshi Tsukioka.
